FaceRig is a program that aims to enable anyone with a webcam to digitally embody awesome characters. The output can be recorded as a movie or streamed to Skype, Twitch, Hangouts or any service that traditionally uses a webcam in real time. FaceRig is currently still in development.

The FaceRig Pro DLC is designed for people who wish to earn money by posting FaceRig generated content online.

Making chat more fun than ever

What exactly is FaceRig you ask? Well, it is a facial recognition program that uses your webcam to track parts of your face which it then maps onto an avatar of your choice to animate it. The output can be played on Skype, Twitch, and other similar services.

FaceRig does all of this in real-time letting your avatar move with you as you speak, mapping your voice and gestures. This is possible because FaceRig encodes the audio and video output from your camera and then acts as a virtual webcam which it relays to your video chat.

Among the possible avatars are monsters, animals, wizards, and a few licensed characters from games (such as Octodad). If you wish to make it more realistic there are also human characters available!

Thus, FaceRig allows you to chat in partially anonymity not showing your real face.

Still developing

FaceRig is currently still growing despite now being out of Beta. Occasionally it suffers some delay in synchronization between you and your onscreen image, and there are plenty of other small bugs.

Despite this, there is clearly great potential for the program. It promises to become a fun tool for all those who love to chat with their friends on PC.

Currently FaceRig is only available through Steam and you have to have an account in order to download it.

Fun with faces

The potential of FaceRig is clear for everyone to see, and you will see even more potential if you use either VoIP programs or play video games.

The differences between the basic version and the Pro DLC are:

– with FaceRig Classic, you are allowed to monetize videos on Youtube/Twitch or similar only as long as you make less than $500 monthly revenue generated from the channels where you post this content. This includes ad-based revenue and voluntary donations (one time or recurrent such as a Patreon).

– with the FaceRig Pro DLC, you are allowed to monetize videos on Youtube/Twitch regardless of the monthly revenue.

– content created with FaceRig Classic that is made public is governed by the Creative Commons license, while content created with the Pro DLC can be made available under whatever license you see fit, as long as it’s not being directly sold (see below for unrestricted commercial use – with FaceRig Studio).

– FaceRig Pro does not bring new assets, technical features or improvements to FaceRig Classic. If you only want to use it for fun, with friends and family there is no reason why you would need the more expensive Pro DLC, except if you want to further support the FaceRig development effort.
